DADE CITY --- Organizers of the Pasco Bug Jam received notification this week that the upcoming 21st annual event on Nov. 8 is officially registered to attempt to break a record for the Guinness Book of World Records.™
Participants at the Bug Jam will attempt to break the record for “most people crammed into an old-style Volkswagen Beetle.” The current record is 15, according to Guinness Book of World Records.™
The record-breaking attempt will be held at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 8 during the Bug Jam. In compliance with Guinness Book of World Records™ rules, all persons attempting the feat must be 5 foot or taller and 18 or older.
Persons wanting to participate in the record-breaking attempt will be able to sign up at the entertainment stage the day of the event.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records™ those crammed in the car must remain with the doors and windows closed for 5 seconds. There are other car requirements, including having all seats and gear shift in place. The Bug is being provided for the record attempt by Classic Camber of Pinellas Park, one of the Bug Jam sponsors.
The current record of 15 was set Dec. 21, 2008 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
“We’re very excited to have been accepted by the Guinness Book of World Records™ in our effort to break the record while entertaining VW lovers,” said Carol Jeffares Hedman, coordinator of the non-profit Pasco Bug Jam.
The Pasco Bug Jam, hosted by the non-profit Pasco County Fair Association Inc., is the largest Volkswagen show in the Southeast and the second largest in the country, Hedman said. Participants come from throughout the country, and even foreign countries, to enter the show that last year had more than 500 VWs entered.
The Bug Jam also includes hundreds of new and used VW parts vendors, children’s games, food, contests and entertainment. This year the 1960s tribute band “Yesterdayze” will be performing in keeping with this year’s theme: “Give Bugs a Chance.”
There will also be a live auction to benefit All Children’s Hospital. All proceeds from the Bug Jam benefit the hospital and other non-profit organizations. Since its inception 21 years ago, the Bug Jam has donated nearly $150,000 to All Children’s Hospital.
Bug Jam hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Pasco County Fairgrounds, 36722 State Road 52, Dade City. Spectator admission is $5 for adults, plus a can of food. Children ages 10 and younger are admitted for a can of food. Parking is $2.
Show entries are $25 and include an event t-shirt, dash plaque, goody bag, and two gate admissions. The deadline to register for the show is Oct. 26. Day-of-show entries will be accepted until 10 a.m. for $25 but do not receive t-shirts or goody bags. Day-of-show entries are also only eligible for top 20 trophies in water- and air-cooled classes. Pre-registered entries will compete in 59 classes.
